Handheld gaming screen protector checklist
This is baseline/spec/community-source-informed guidance for Steam Deck, ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, and Legion Go buyers. It is not a hands-on scratch, drop, optical, or touch-latency test of specific screen protector listings.
Disclosure: shopping links are generic Amazon searches marked sponsored/nofollow. We have not added an affiliate tag or claimed hands-on testing for any listed protector.
Fit beats brand hype
Buy for the exact handheld and screen size first. A protector that is almost the right size can interfere with case lips, rounded corners, touch edges, or docking grip points.
Glossy, matte, or anti-glare?
Glossy glass usually keeps the sharpest image. Matte or anti-glare films can help bright rooms and travel, but may soften text or add grain on dense UI screens.
Device fit notes before you order
- Steam Deck LCD vs Steam Deck OLED: do not assume one listing covers every model. Check the product title, cutouts, corner radius, and whether the seller calls out the OLED 7.4-inch panel separately from the original LCD model.
- ROG Ally / ROG Ally X: use a 7-inch Ally-specific listing and check whether it mentions the X model if the case or bezel tolerance is tight. ASUS lists the Ally X display as a 10-point multi-touch panel with Gorilla Glass Victus and DXC coating, so the protector choice is mostly about glare preference and install quality rather than fixing a weak bare screen.
- Lenovo Legion Go: the larger 8.8-inch display needs a Legion Go-specific protector. Avoid generic tablet protectors unless you are comfortable with imperfect edge fit and no handheld-specific cutout notes.
- Docks and cases: if your grip case has a raised lip, read recent buyer photos for edge lifting. A thick glass protector plus a tight case can peel at the corners.
Buying checklist
Confirm exact device
Match Steam Deck LCD/OLED, ROG Ally/Ally X, or Legion Go in the listing title and recent review photos.
Pick finish deliberately
Choose glossy for the cleanest image, matte for glare reduction, or anti-fingerprint coatings if you play touch-heavy games.
Check install kit
Look for alignment frames, dust stickers, wipes, and a spare sheet. A good kit matters more than vague “9H” marketing.
Install prep that prevents most failures
- Install before a long trip, not at the airport or hotel.
- Use a dust-controlled room, clean hands, and a bright side light to spot lint.
- Remove the grip case before install, then reinstall it slowly to see whether the case lifts the protector edge.
- Test edge touch, quick settings overlays, on-screen keyboards, and game launchers after install.
- If the protector causes glare, rainbowing, corner lift, or touch misses, remove it; do not force a bad fit because the listing promised universal compatibility.
