Accessory setup guide

Keyboard and mouse setup checklist for handheld gaming PCs

A handheld PC can become a tiny desktop for strategy games, MMOs, launchers, mods, passwords, Discord, and quick admin work. This guide is baseline/spec/community-source-informed guidance, not hands-on testing of a specific keyboard, mouse, hub, or lap desk.

Hotel desks, couch trays, quick MMO/admin sessions

Tiny desk mode

Use a compact keyboard, travel mouse, USB-C dock or hub, and a charger strong enough to keep the handheld from draining while peripherals are attached.

Lower-latency input than Bluetooth in action games

2.4GHz dongle kit

A single USB-A or USB-C dongle can be simpler than juggling Bluetooth pairing, but it consumes a port and may need a hub when charging.

Minimal packing and turn-based games

Bluetooth fallback kit

Bluetooth is convenient for menus, strategy games, typing passwords, and travel, but keep expectations modest for twitch shooters or rhythm games.

The short answer

For most Steam Deck, ROG Ally, ROG Ally X, Legion Go, and Windows handheld owners, the most reliable keyboard-and-mouse kit is a compact keyboard, a travel mouse with both Bluetooth and 2.4GHz modes, and a USB-C hub or dock with power delivery. Use Bluetooth when packing light; use a dongle or wired fallback when input feel matters.

Do not buy the keyboard first and solve ports later. A great mouse still feels bad if the handheld is discharging, the hub blocks the grip, or the dongle forces you to unplug the charger.

What to verify before buying accessories

Good first kit: compact keyboard + dual-mode travel mouse + short USB-C hub with PD passthrough + one spare USB-C cable. Upgrade to a larger keyboard or dock only after you know the setup survives a real session.

Device notes

Steam Deck / OLED

Desktop mode rewards a real keyboard

Valve's official specs list Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB-C with DisplayPort, and a 3.5mm audio jack. A keyboard and mouse are especially useful for Desktop Mode, launchers, passwords, mod managers, and browser setup.

ROG Ally / Ally X

Windows makes peripherals powerful

ASUS lists modern wireless and USB-C connectivity for current Ally hardware. Treat the Ally like a small Windows laptop: check Armoury Crate, display mode, input focus, and charger behavior before blaming the mouse.

Legion Go

Kickstand desk mode is the advantage

Lenovo's PSREF is the source of truth for regional specs. The Legion Go form factor makes desk-style keyboard and mouse play natural, but still plan cable angles, charger placement, and tray space.
